Robert Irwin and Sam Pang to battle for gold as Logie nominations announced

Gold Logie Race Heats Up

The 66th TV Week Logie Awards nominations unveiled on Monday morning set the stage for a compelling contest for the coveted Gold Logie. Seven personalities were announced as nominees, including returning contenders Robert Irwin, Ally Langdon, Julia Morris, Lisa Millar, Poh Ling Yeow, and newcomers Sam Pang and Todd Woodbridge. Notably absent from the list was any personality directly linked to the Seven Network, though Pang has appeared across multiple networks including Ten, Nine, and Seven.

Robert Irwin, who will host this year's ceremony on August 16, receives his second Gold Logie nomination following his first last year for his work on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!. His co-host Julia Morris, also nominated for the fifth time, shared bittersweet feelings as their hit reality show was recently rested by Network 10.

Sam Pang, who hosted the Logies for the past three years but declined to return this year, received his first-ever Logie nomination. Despite expecting a quieter year, he admitted to being caught off guard by the recognition. All nominees expressed gratitude, with Ling Yeow reflecting on her family's migration from Malaysia and the opportunities Australia provided.

ABC Dominates Across Categories

The ABC emerged as the most nominated broadcaster with 41 nods overall, including 33 in the 'best' categories decided by a combination of judges, audience data, and public votes. The public broadcaster's strength spanned drama, comedy, children's programming, news, reality, lifestyle, factual, and entertainment. In the comedy arena, Dog Park and Austin each received three nominations, while Gruen Nation, Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont Spelling Bee, and Hard Quiz were all recognized in the best comedy entertainment category.

In children's programming, the ABC claimed five of the six nominations, underscoring its long-standing commitment to quality content for young audiences. The network also received three nominations in the most popular new talent category, with classical pianist Andrea Lam (The Piano) and actors Eloise Hart and Lila McGuire both recognized for their breakout performances.

Streaming Services Make Their Mark

Prime Video overtook Netflix for the first time to become the most nominated streaming service, picking up 11 nods. The WWII drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North was the most nominated show overall with six nominations, including best miniseries or telemovie, best lead actor for Hollywood star Jacob Elordi, best lead actress for Odessa Young, and supporting actor nods for Simon Baker and Thomas Weatherall. The second season of Deadloch also performed strongly with four nominations, including best actress in a comedy for Kate Box and Madeleine Sami.

Netflix's Tasmanian murder mystery The Survivors garnered five nominations, including best miniseries and best lead actress for Bridgerton star Yerin Ha. The ABC's Mystery Road: Origin followed with four nominations, including best drama and acting nods for Mark Coles Smith and Tuuli Narkle. Disney+ received its sole nomination in the scripted comedy category for the Victorian-era rom-com The Artful Dodger.

New Award Honors Bruce McAvaney

Sports broadcasting legend Bruce McAvaney was honored with a new award named after him: the Bruce McAvaney Award for Most Popular Sports Presenter. True to his humble nature, McAvaney joked about the irony of possibly winning or losing an award carrying his own name. He was nominated for his commentary on the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo for SBS.

The Ray Martin Award for most popular news or public affairs presenter featured familiar faces from the major networks: Ally Langdon, David Speers, Karl Stefanovic, Michael Usher, Sarah Abo, and Sarah Ferguson. Ten and SBS were again absent from this category, reflecting the dominance of Nine and Seven in news coverage.

Notable Nominations and Omissions

The nominations provided a reasonably balanced snapshot of the Australian TV industry, mixing familiar veterans with emerging stars. Sam Neill, Claudia Karvan, and Brooke Satchwell were among the established names, while new faces like Jacob Elordi, Yerin Ha, and Aisha Dee added fresh energy. Popular shows such as Dancing with the Stars and Have You Been Paying Attention? received nods alongside newer dramas like The Family Next Door and comedies like Dog Park.

In an unusual twist, 39-year-old former English cricket captain Stuart Broad was nominated in the most popular new talent category after his viral despair in the Seven commentary box during the Ashes tour. He joins actors Rowan Witt and Tamala from Paramount+’s Ghosts: Australia.

Voting System Revised

Following grumblings over the new voting system introduced in 2024, the Logie Awards have adjusted the process for this year. Under the previous system, 'best' awards were decided by a combination of judges (30%), audience data (20%), and public votes (50%). Streamers felt disadvantaged because they were unwilling to provide concrete ratings data, losing an automatic 20% of the score. The revised system now has each judge providing a score out of 30 for assessment criteria and a score out of 10 for audience engagement, with those scores combined and weighted to make up 50% of the total, while public votes contribute the remaining 50%.

The winners will be announced at the 66th TV Week Logie Awards, broadcast on Sunday, August 16, on the Seven Network.
